Apple – Logic Pro X – new DAW – no update option for previous Users – catches up to the others..

Apple just released Logic Pro X at the Mac Appstore (the one for Software).
we all have heard rumours – first the details:

bzw: does NOT support 32bit plugins – so all non 32bit plugins will disappear. (and no retina support for those lucky users of Retina Macs)

1) no upgrades – we all need to buy it at the app store, there’s no other option. so update or buying it the first time is 180€
2) the price is a bit higher than the old version but Apple only ported the 9.X Version to the App Store – so Logic 9 was the last boxed version and unbundled Wave Burner – the CD burning tool and Main Stage – you can buy Main Stage 3 separately – if you like to burn a master CD – not possible – Apple wants to go all the way – no optical drives. anyway – burning CDs is now a bit harder – I really liked Wave Burner.. but ok, thats not new, they just keep it as it was ..

3) the new features cover pitch correction just like autotune or melodyne
4) drummer: adds a preset kind of drum machine to help you to .. well, add drums even if you don’t know how.. so it is something like Steinbergs ez drummer and others.. but built in.
5) there is a remote for the iPad – I really wondered why Steinberg needed to be the first while apple did not support their own hardware ;)

6) control has changed. so there is a macro box to control multiple parameters just like Ableton live also the controls are now at the bottom (well, like Ableton live?)

7) it will only run on the LATEST OS X Mountain Lion 10.8.4 – so since a lot of musicians needed to keep it at Snow Leopard to save some Editors and other special things running with Rosetta only – you need to update.

8) new submix – tracks can be handles as a sub group – nice!

9) overall GUI changes – looks both : easier and familiar

10) Plugin / Mixer Page simplified – switch without holding ALT or SHIFT

11) changes in score editor

12) Genres Rock, Alternative, Songwriter und R&B  for the drummer – can be changed and varied – well, none of my style but nice to have, huh? that kit is a photo realistic shot of a drum set – tuu much skeomorphism.. I thought this might be all over with Scott Forstall fired..?

13) Bass Amp Designer – this looks interesting to make it sound differently, non linear I assume.. so – thanks! also some new stomp boxes added.

14) some vintage keyboard as a sample player are added.

15) NEW SYNTHS: vintage synth called Retro Synth added, looks wuite simple but seems to be nice, but don’t know if it’s diva / fxpansion style or just another es2… so let’s trust them to sound cool. 2 ENVs, 2 OSCs, FM, Wavetables, 2 LFOs, one dedicated to Vibrato (as it looks) – not bad sounding. it’s basic. it changes its colour to PPG blue when the Wavetable tab is open and to DX-brown when FM is open, but nevertheless, this is 2 OSC FM, just as simple as on a Jupiter 8 or something… plus Wavetables. So you might want to compare this to a Microwave I in that case.

16) Arpeggiator with Step Sequencer (16 Step) and MIDI plugins added, just like live (you guessed it) – and LFO and envelope generators.. like this:

17) lots of presets and libraries

here’s a 1st look

Demo on Drummer

the Retro-Synth (has FM btw – so it is a Standard Synth but with Wavetables, FM and Sync – so it’s not just a simple Standard – guessed from the demo quality it is more a structural thing than a simulation? but need to have an ear on it myself)

another checkup..
