Phatty's big secret is (imo) the filter overdrive circuit. That allows it sound raw and dirty. Maybe that adds to the vintage sound impression.

Thanks, I was able to play it now. :) What part of the patch is responsible for the overdrive kinda sound? Is that simply the filter fully opened, passing the raw VCO? Or is there an actual overdrive in the path? Like the part where it's breaking up, near the end.

Not sure if I understand your question, but the MOTM-440 and MS20 filters are absolutely NOT related. The '440 has this classic american fat SSM sound, and at a very high quality. The MS20 filters are very different, and not really fat and warm. They excel when used in near self-osc...

MOTM-440, definitely, for a super fat and warm sound. But I also really like the MS20 HP/LP filter set if you want an aggressive sound.

I think although Yamaha probably loves the product, they have no idea wether or not it will sell. Big marketing campaigns cost money, so does a world-wide introduction. They're just being extra careful I guess. Remember that even if *we* freaks drool over the thing and buy it all, it may not...

It would seriously reduce the 'couch effect'. If it would be able to produce convincing audio as a standalone product, with good fx... cool.

My guess is that Vogy's internal resolution is much higher, even while turning the knobs. Not doing so would probably cause zipper noise, especially when turning the filter freq knob or pitch knob. It's probably just the display system that breaks the range down into the 7- bit MIDI range.

This doesn't really have to mean the pots have a direct link with the analog circuitry. Could be that the pots are scanned using a digital interface, and that the last position of all pots is remembered in battery-backed memory (or flash ram). Anyway, the fact that the Vogy simply 'remembers'...

440 demo mp3 Here's a little MOTM 440 demo. Two oscs (saw +pwm) into 440, which is modulated by a EG. Filter is initialy almost closed, no reso, and I slowly open the freq knob, then close again. Next round I do the same, but with some reso applied. As usual, play as loud as possible...
