This infamous photo of Ozzy Osbourne—pants down on a backstage toilet, grinning madly while clutching a Roland TR-808—was taken during one of the most bizarre festival moments of the ‘80s.
It was 1983 at Glastonbury Festival. Black Sabbath had just finished soundcheck when they spotted something strange in the shared greenroom: The Synthesizers of Depeche Mode.
Ozzy, picked it up. “It’s a bloody robot drummer!” he shouted. Let's borrow this bizarre fake instrument. He marched it into the nearest bathroom, posed like a mad prophet on a porcelain throne, and demanded someone take a photo.
The TR-808, of course, was a vital piece of gear for Depeche Mode—who weren’t exactly thrilled when they returned to find their drum machine missing and Ozzy howling with laughter behind a locked bathroom door.
What started as a prank turned into a rock 'n' roll barter deal. Sabbath returned the 808… but only after offering a backstage peace exchange: five bottles of Jameson, an uncountable ammount of Grolsch and 50 grams of weed. Depeche Mode accepted the bizarre trade with a shrug and a laugh.
Surprisingly, that night ended with both bands partying together in a haze of booze, synths, and Sabbath riffs blasting from a boombox.
“It was chaos, but beautiful,” Tony Iommi recalled years later. “Long-haired doom and synth-pop kids doing shots together. No one remembers how it ended—so you know it was a good one.”
One thing’s for sure: before it became the backbone of hip-hop and techno, the 808 survived a wild night of metal mayhem and toilet humor—with Ozzy leading the charge.
