Strymon TimeLine MX - my 2 Cent

TimeLine MX is Strymon's update of one of the most iconic (digital) delay pedals of the last decade. Enhanced with new delay algorithms, its dual engine allows you to run two delays in parallel or in series (in both directions).

Housed in a rock-solid chassis with everything you need for your MIDI-sync-pleasures, 12 different delay variations are waiting to be explored, with enough depth for complex sound design while still being streamlined enough to get satisfying instant results or to play live when WYSIWYG is the main objective.

Depending on the respective modes, you can add a lot of character by simulating quirks and aliasing of the retro counterparts, or colouring the signal.

I especially like the new freely configurable multitap delay, ICE, and Spectral for modern ambient. For self-oscillating Dub Techno feedback orgies, Oil Can, Drum, and - of course - dbucket and dTape are quite useful.

I found that the verb is a nice and useful add-on, but I would still choose specialised units for that purpose.

What about the competition?

In that price range, Strymon enters the ring with some other heavyweights, among which I think, Meris LVX is the strongest competitor. Its architecture is more flexible in terms of deep sound design, but also much more complicated to master, especially if you don't want to use the free editor. Both offer an absolute pristine sound. There is no better or worse, just taste.

TL;DR
Strymon TimeLine MX is the logical evolution of an already great delay effect pedal. Yes, it is not cheap but it has the potential to be the main (or only) delay pedal in your DAW-less setup. Its well-thought-out interface is fun to use, and it's almost impossible to make it sound bad.
