Hydrogele – auch bekannt als Schleim, Sekret, Gelee oder Glibber – werden oft mit Ekel, Krankheit oder Verfall in Verbindung gebracht und bilden einen Grundstein des Lebens. Wesentliche biologische Funktionen wie Mobilität, (Immun-)Abwehr, Fortpflanzung oder Nahrungsaufnahme werden häufig durch komplexe und vielfältige Kolloidnetzwerke ermöglicht. Im Wasser, unter der Erde oder in der Luft; in Grenzflächen oder unter extremen Bedingungen: Überall sind sogenannte Biofilme zu finden, die eine nahezu universelle Grenzfläche bilden.

Von Bathybius Haeckelii – der vermeintlichen „Urmaterie“ – als Quelle des Lebens bis hin zu holobiontischen Hybridwesen nach Lynn Margulis oder als Lieferant kosmischen Horrors à la H. R. Giger oder H. P. Lovecraft ist die menschliche Kulturgeschichte nicht mehr ohne Schleim zu denken. Aber auch dieses universelle Medium ist mit den komplexen Folgen des menschengemachten Klimawandels konfrontiert, etwa der Versauerung der Ozeane oder dem Artensterben.

re:natura #03 – Myxos bietet eine Vielfalt von zehn einzigartigen künstlerischen Ansätzen, die von phonetischen Experimenten, elektroakustischer Improvisation und poetischer Übersetzung bis hin zu Point No Points überschwänglicher Feier aller schleimigen Dinge reichen.

Taking inspiration from Lumbricus terrestris, snartic created a calm soundscape, with light grainy undertones to simulate peaceful subterranean processes. Worms aid with soil fertility through their secretion of slime.

Càule - Radicale #24

This electroacoustic improvisation by italian quartet Càule traces the flux, spontaneous growth patterns and crystallisations enabled by biological polymers.

Gregor Dys - Schleimsprache

With Science Fiction and its sound design as a backdrop, Gregor Dys uses foley techniques to sculpt a polymorphous being. Viscous field recordings are compiled into a soundscape, fragmenting and mangling them in the course.

Raphael Zöschinger - Thixotropy

Just as the spectrum extends between the poles liquid and solid, the word “thixotropy” stretches between the letters T and Y. Examining the phonetic material lying in between, Raphael Zöschinger finds phantom words in it, linking phonetics to materialism.

Cadenian Arts Club - Mycetozoa Ontogeny

Here, Hydrogels are associated with living slime: slime molds, Mycetozoa. Thought as a continuous loop, the work illustrates the repeating life cycle of these unicellular miracle beings.

“You know – love is when you evenclean the snot of your partner.”
Drawing inspiration from a love story, Gulnara’s poetic approach investigates the relationship to our bodily fluids.

From the perspective of an embryo, safe in its shell and feasting on delicious yolk – this experimental synthesis composition imagines the eagerness and anticipation the young inhabitant of the egg might feel as it prepares for life beginning.
