James Brown wurde, nachdem bei einem Zahnarzttermin sein schlechter Gesundheitszustand aufgefallen war, am 24. Dezember 2006 ins Emory-Crawford-Long-Krankenhaus in Atlanta, Georgia, eingeliefert, wo er in der Nacht zum 25. Dezember 2006 um 1:45 Uhr Ortszeit an den Folgen einer schweren Lungenentzündung verstarb.
