If you buy VCO, Filter and Envelope you will come very close.

Thomas Lehn plays an EMS AKS, often live with other musicians from the avantgarde/new music world. I have seen him live once at the Academy of Music here in Cologne. He really plays it like an instrument, performs with a lot of virtuosity. His official website is

The S1 sold well, still sells well.. and it isn't "cheap" also.. but ppl tend to get the biggest one. on a modular meeting, most ppl watch the big black synths as well.. ;) big and expensive as a selling argument? well, let's have a look who buys synths these days..

What's "wrong" with the S1? Absolutely nothing!

I spent considerable time trying it out at Messe and I was floored by it. For my money, it's one of the best synths I've ever heard. It has a VERY broad sonic range -from bright, cold, cutting, clinical, and precise to dark, warm and fuzzy. The signal path is very clean and the pots have a very wide range. It is also very well made.

It has the reputation of sounding cold, but that's just if you don't know what you're doing. It has plenty of potential for funk and grit. The filter mixers can saturate, and Wowa Cwejman (the designer, very cool guy!) showed me tricks like feedbacking one mixer back into the other to push the whole thing into overdrive -giving you a distortion circuit with a tone control (because the filters are in the feedback loop). Lovely stuff.

It's a killer. I want one. :)

Yeah -it's all I use these days for performing (which is what I do mainly). They have replaced all my former live synths, and racks of outboard gear. The G2 is (in my humble opinion) the best digital synthesizer ever made. I've been using it extensively for 3 years, and it still blows my mind almost every day.

So what you're saying is that the SOS review is dead on. Interesting!

I never read any reviews on the S1. This is just my personal observation. If SOS states the same, then maybe that's just because it's true . No, really, this is one of the best synths you can buy these days. Buy one! When I move into my new studio building, I'll have lots of space and intend to buy some quality analog gear. The S1 is top on th list.

Wowa Cwejman is a very nice, humble, helpful and cool guy and I sincerely hope he can stay in business with his stuff. It's not cheap, but concerning the hardware and audio quality you get, it's worth every cent.

there is nothing "Wrong " with the S1. This is one of the best semimodular synthesizer ever (except the 2600 maybe) ! The S1 is unique and not a Moog (what I really like is that you can do Moogish sounds, of course you can do ! .. but this is only an option) . Meanwhile I am doing sounds with the S1 you never can achieve with other synts in that price region, and you will never be able to deliver with a Moog (why is everything challenged with that very limited Moog ??

If people are selling a product like the S1 , they never had learned to use it proper. It sounds sweet,it sounds bad, it sounds noizy , it sounds fat, etc ... it sounds always GREAT. I love the S1 and the SOS review is a 100 % true .

btw: Why is someone commenting , that th S1 sounds like an evolver without owing the products ? crazy shit.- Thats a foolish Kindergarten blabla from people without any experience or knowhow. If you don´t have it, you don´t have it.

Again, it is a great synth. And if you (really) want to have the same Moog Sound an in the Moog, just buy the Moog filter and connect it to the S1, thats it !

Over the last couple of years I get the impression of a pattern: the S1 gets sold relatively fast after being purchaced. I have the idea that after about two months, this synth changes owners more often than other synths.

Actually I've never saw an used S1 for sale, just once, that was somthing like a prototype or the Mk1, which a swedish guy wanted to sell here in the forum, this was already a longer time ago...

Yes the S1 might be confusing in the beginning as the routing possibilities are quite complex. It took me a while too to understand it and still I can´t handle it perfectly.

did i already mention how much i love my S1 and how excited i'm about it everytime i play with it? Almost every day i'm finding new sounds - new ways of connecting things

but there is one problem: the input jacks don't like the orginal patch-cables - the connection sometimes not working or i have to jiggle on the cable a bit

with the doepfer-pacthc cables it's ok

Das ist derselbe. Mein Paket mit dem VCO-2RM wurde angeblich schon weggeschickt, allerdings muss es erst mal ankommen...
Penko von Schneiders Büro hat mir auch was über den Typen erzählt, was mich etwas skeptisch gemacht hat. Laut Tracking-Number sollte es aber heute oder morgen hier in Wien sein.
